Families who have members with
disabilities face many challenges that affect their future. These challenges
can include struggling with interpersonal relationships, emotional
health, poor integration into peers’ play, lack of accessible
fitness equipment and separation from their community. Playgrounds
are a traditional site for families to interact with other families,
but often playground designs required persons with disabilities
to sit on the sidelines. A universal playground design addresses
many of these issues by providing an area where persons of all
ages can come an interact in a safe, accessible and fun way. The
Independence Riverview playground addresses emotional play, physical
play, full access (smooth surface allows access for both wheelchairs
and walkers), and fitness concerns.
The Independence Riverview playground takes the adventure, learning,
creative, and fitness playground themes and brings them together
into an environment that has something for everyone. Creativity panels run through out the structure,
diggers and more panels provide information about nature, the music circle creates
a natural outlet for creative energies, the balance pod, climbers, and swing
incorporate several different types of fitness activities. There is literally
something for everyone to participate in no matter their level of disability.
The playground also provides a “classroom” for several of our local
colleges who have special education studies.
We hope you will join us as we build for our future
through providing a place where individuals and families can come
together to play, dream, and build a stronger community. |
